The need for orphanages in Kenya is enormous. With a population of about 50 million people, Kenya is home to 3 million orphans. Seven hundred Kenyan children become orphaned every day.
The Hope Centre
The Hope Centre was founded by Bob and Ethel Carter, a couple in their mid-60s from Woodstock, Ga. Instead of retiring, they saw the desperate need of the Kenyan children and worked diligently and sacrificially to open an orphanage in 2008.
Since then, hundreds of children have grown up at The Hope Centre and experienced the love of Jesus firsthand.
We provide the love of Christ, food, clothing, shelter, medical care and education to up to 60 children at any given time. The orphanage includes separate dorms for the boys and girls, an office building, a dining hall, a kitchen, a missionary house and a guest house.
A day in the life of our children can be quite busy. Our kids do many chores, such as cleaning their dorms or peeling potatoes for dinner.
Our goal for the children living in The Hope Centre is to know Jesus as Savior and Lord so that when they return to their home communities, they will share Christ with those who don’t know Him. This area is home to the Luo tribe which is considered an unreached people group because less than 3% have heard about Jesus.
When our children age out of the orphanage, they are fully equipped to share the Gospel. Every evening at The Hope Centre, our kids gather for a time of worship and Bible study led by our staff members. Often the older children prepare and lead a time of devotion.
Our children often sing in the local church choir as well as The Hope Centre choir.
Some teach Sunday school classes or present Gospel drama presentations.
With school, studies, chores, devotions and church activities, it may sound like a very busy life, but there is time for fun and hanging out with friends.
